North Sulawesi is located within the ‘Coral Triangle’, a territory which spreads from western Thailand all the way through eastern Indonesia. This is where many scientists believe life began in the ocean and it is widely thought that it holds the most bio diverse marine habitats on earth.

For this reason diving in Indonesia has been held in high regard amongst the diving community and North Sulawesi is no exception. To the east of Borneo and below the Philippines, Sulawesi is an oddly shaped island in the Celebes Sea. North Sulawesi refers to the most northerly point. Just a few hundred meters offshore the continental shelf plunges towards the deep oceanic trenches which offers nutrient rich waters. The fact that evolution here has been uninterrupted for millions of year means that the marine life in this particular part of the Coral Triangle is extremely diverse

Bunaken Island lies just a few kilometers offshore, a plateau extends from the island before reaching the drop off which descends to hundreds of meters. Coral life on the wall is extremely dense and different species both hard and soft compete for space. These particular walls have gone some way into making diving in Indonesia what it is today and draw traveling divers from all over the world. Large pelagics like Black and White Tip Sharks, Trevally and Napoleon Wrasse work their way up the reef, whilst Green Sea Turtles lodge themselves into the wall to rest. If you’ve got a skillful guide you might be able to see finger nail size Pygmy Seahorses latched onto Gorgonian Fans, not a common site even when you are diving in Indonesia.

The Lembeh Strait is a complete contrast in bottom topography in comparison to the walls Bunaken Island. Located off the eastern coast of North Sulawesi the Strait is a channel of water that lies between the landmass of Sulawesi and Lembeh Island. The shallow black sand slopes have created a truly unique marine habitat for the dwellers that have adapted themselves supremely to this environment. There are some coral reef formations but these are relatively few and far between. This is where life has come to compete against itself in which evolution has created many weird and wonderful creatures divers refer to as ‘critters’. Mimic Octopus have the ability to take the form of up to ten different types of other species including Lionfish, Snake Eels and Flounder in order to confuse predator and prey. Angler Fish dangle a lure just millimeters from their mouth in order to attract potential prey. Carrier Crabs camouflage and defend themselves by placing Sea Urchins on their shell whilst they make their way from one spot to another.

The contrast of Bunaken and Lembeh make diving in Indonesia even more attractive. For the traveling diver willing to go that extra mile for something special North Sulawesi will excite and intrigue for many visits. For more information on diving Bunaken and Lembeh including travel operators visit
diving asia.

The first time I heard about the ancient Buddhist temple of Borobodur was in my geography lessons at college. The geography lecturer spent many Indonesia vacations visiting this man-made mountain and taking photographs for his lecture slide shows.

Since then, I’ve been fascinated by this great wonder of the ancient world. Nobody quite knows when it was built but archaeologists think it’s been constructed sometime between the end of the 7th and the beginning of the 8th century AD.

For some time it served as a spiritual center of Javanese Buddhism. At some point it became lost and forgotten and was only rediscovered in the 18th century.

The excavation of this monument was ordered and overseen by the new British Governor of Java at that time, Sir thomas Stamford Raffles.

When you look at it from above, you can see that it resembles a lotus, the sacred flower of Buddha. The whole structure is pyramid-like, built on and around a hill and composed of lava rock.

Being recognized as the largest Buddhist temple in the world, it has no central altar. What is most impressive and interesting is that the galleries are like guiding the faithful on a spiritual journey. Moving upwards from terrace to terrace, each level symbolises a higher plane of consciousness. Pilgrims may have come here to journey the pathway to enlightenment.

Some scholars believe that, as Indonesia and the Javanese converted from Hinduism and Buddhism to Islam around the 14th century, Borobudur was abandoned.

After its restoration, Indonesia‘s most visited tourist attraction has again become a place of pilgrimage for Buddhists. At the same time it’s also a place where, on your Indonesia Vacations, you can wonder at the mysteries of the ancient world.

source: www.divingseasafari.com

Indonesia have far-flung islands, with over 17,000 islands, streching more than 5,000 km from west to east, with coastline more than 80,000 km washed by tropical water, Indonesia has developed resorts in tandem with the establishment of regular air connections, and in many of these diving and snorkeling are given priority. Outside flights to Manado have firther opened up this fine dive site, and liveaboard boats have also made debut, offering divers the chance to explore really remote areas like Banda Sea.

Indonesia is the least known of the world’s best dive locations. Introduction of scuba gear and the beginning of dive operations in Indonesiago back nearly 20 years, and each year more new, exiting locations are opening their doors.

Sea Safari Liveaboard dive boats have made a big impact on the scope and range of diving. Sea Safari Liveaboard operations take divers to Banda Sea, Manado, Derawan, Sangalaki, Komodo, Flores, Sumbawa, Bali, Menjangan island, Bunaken, Lombok, Papua, Raja Ampat, Sorong and other dive sites in east Indonesia. Sea Safari boats/vessels are pinisi cruises, the legend cruise of Indonesia traditional sailor.

Pinisi cruise is becoming popular in Indonesia, especially in Bali with holiday makers, cruise operators who also enjoy diving and liveaboards. In Indonesia, liveaboard diving operation take diver to Banda, Komodo, Alor, Raja Ampat, Nusa Tenggara, Lombok, Bali, Ambon, Borneo, Sangalaki, Derawan and others more than hundreds dive sites in Indonesia.

When diving started in Indonesia region, it was cheap hobby once you had bought a regulator and other basic gear. Today, the relationship between learning to dive, buyng the gear and getting going has changed. The gear is getting more sophisticated but less costly, dive courses are becoming more competitively piced and the cost of diving itself is getting more expensive – mainly because today’s diver is a more sophisticated animal and not the hardly aficinado of yesteryear.

Interestingly, Indonesia’s most popular tourist destinations, Bali, also has some excellent diving, including superb werk and in Bali, number of dive operations in highest. But good diving is not exactly located in your hotel lobby. In 5 star resort have opened up in nearly every corner of the island, offering serious divers opportunity to undertake dive safari, stringing together a number of fantastic dive days without sacrificing time, energy or comfort.

Sea Safari as liveaboard and diving operator over Indonesia archipelago have international standart emergeny procedure in place. Generally, bert practice is to dive conservatively, safety and always to make a decompression stop on ascent. Reef are rich enough that you will never be bored apending a few extra minutes as the end of a dive exploring shallows.

thejakartapost.com has recently published an article on eco-resorts in the Thousand Islands. It sounds perfect for tropical Indonesia vacations, far away from the poluted cities.

Here are a few excerpts from the much longer article:

A touch of eco-paradise

Kanupriya Kapoor

Changing your lifestyle to make it more environmentally friendly is easier said than done, but eco-resorts such as one on Pulau Macan in the Thousand Islands make such changes pleasant and rewarding.

While environmental issues are finally getting the media and government attention they deserve, the urgency of the steadily deteriorating state of our planet has yet to permeate political and social realms.

And people (especially in urban areas), bombarded constantly with warnings and reprimands about their impacts on the environment, are often reluctant to adjust their lifestyles, are ill-informed about how they can do so, or are just discouraged by the blatant negligence of relevant authorities…

[...]

…Roderick des Tombes, a Jakarta-born self-proclaimed eco-warrior, is working toward – and succeeding in – constructing a lifestyle that is beneficial to himself and the environment. The eco-resort he manages on Pulau Macan – a tiny island among the Thousand Islands archipelago – is a business venture that makes environmentalism inextricable from the indulgent pleasures of an island vacation.

Located an hour-and-something boat ride from Jakarta’s Ancol Marina, the Tiger Islands Village & Eco Resort (Pulau Macan) is a little dot on the map of the Indonesian archipelago – and by “little” I mean you can circle it on foot in 10 minutes at a leisurely pace – that aptly encapsulates the immense diversity that the archipelago boasts…

[...]

…As the boat slows to dock at Pulau Macan, one can feel Jakarta melt away – the unending traffic congestion; the growing rudeness and disorder; the deadlines, projects, malls; the suffocation – all of it. The idyllic resort island and its deserted twin, known together as the Tiger Islands, promise everything that visitors undoubtedly expect – peace, quiet, solitude and a place to get away from it all.

Startlingly blue waters, speckled with the other islands of the Thousand Islands chain, surround Pulau Macan. The kinds of fish one only sees on Discovery Channel swim by the edge of the island with a lazy, sometimes unabashed, curiosity. White sands that are warmed just enough by sunlight seeping in through the high canopy pave a leisurely walk towards one’s cabin or hut, as the case may be.

The island’s accommodation ranges from red brick cabins and wooden bungalows on the interior, to driftwood huts and, for the extra-adventurous souls, spacious tents at the waterfront. The buildings have been designed to blend in perfectly with the immediate environment, and have thus been fitted with driftwood furniture and a minimum of electrical appliances, all of which are energy-efficient. For those wary of the tropical heat, the breeze off the Java Sea is complemented by the architecture of the cabins and ensures pleasant temperatures throughout the day…

[...]

******************************************************************************

Doesn’t this just fill you with vacation fever? Escape the cold winter to soak up the sun for a couple of weeks, and know that you’re doing something environmentally friendly… what better way to spend your vacation. I’ll definitely check this place out.

What was only a supposition, now it is proven, that the bird flu virus has evolved in two strains that are distinct genetically speaking. This is not good news as it might cause even more deaths among humans and the researchers will have to work double for finding an effective vaccine against these two forms of bird flu virus.

Between the year 2003 and 2005, US scientists have been collecting and analyzing more than 300 samples of H5N1 virus taken from infected birds and humans. They discovered that in 2003 and 2004 the human and bird population was affected by the same type of virus that was active in Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. But in 2005 a new strain of H5N1 virus appeared and infected people from Indonesia. This virus is in a continuous genetic development and as time goes by our treatment option become more and more restrained.

Since 2003 the virus affected 180 people and killed 100 from all over the world. Doctors are afraid that a pandemic could start if the virus is not kept under control and hope that this virus will remain a bird virus and will not change into a human one. If the virus gains the ability of transmitting itself from human to human then the whole world population is in danger.

Fortunately, according to the scientists those two forms of the virus do not have the possibility of spreading easily from on person to another.

Until now the US scientists have been trying to find a vaccine that will kill both viruses. The vaccine will be 100% definitive once the exact form of a pandemic virus is known. The scientists believe that one vaccine could offer partial protection against the other type of virus strain if it works against the first one.

Scientists need to move fast because the viruses have the ability of changing their status and of developing very fast, gaining even the possibility of transmitting themselves from one person to another.

The thing is that no one had expected for the virus to travel around the world so easily and to mutate so fast creating another strain. But scientists are confident that by keeping the virus under control in birds they can find a suitable vaccine in a year or two. As long as the governments work together and help each other there is no need for panic as there is still hope for a cure.

INGREDIENTS OF INDONESIAN DISHES

Indonesia dishes are amongst the most delicious in the world, to make Indonesian dishes we need a lot of ingredients. But sometime we have a problem to find or to know ingredients we need to make Indonesian dishes.

Have the following ingredients on hand in your pantry to make it easier to prepare Indonesian-style dishes. Most ingredients can be found in your local supermarket or greengrocer. Some of the specialized ingredients can be found in Asian Food stores.

These is some of the following ingredients of Indonesian dishes:

-	Capsicum: Also known as red or green peppers.

-	Capsicum:From the candleberry tree, these nuts look like macadamia nuts and taste like Brazil nuts. Available from Asian Food strores.

-	Cardamon: Spice from the ginger family. Seeds are purchased whole, either in or out of their pods, or grounds.

-	Chillies: Small red chillies are the hottest. The larger red chillies are milder and green chillies are milder still. Seeds are often discarded as they are the hottest part of the chilli..

-	Coconut Cream: Thick white liquid that rises to the surface when coconut milk is left to stand.

-	Coconut Milk: This is not the juice from the inside of the fresh coconut but the liquid extracted from the white flesh.

-	Coriander: Indonesians use only the seed of the coriander plant, not the leaves or roots.

-	Cumin: An aromatic spice with a pungent flavour, seeds are available whole or ground.

-	Egg Noodles (fine, dry): looks like fine spaghetti which has been wound into a small bundless.

-	Ginger: Fresh ginger root is recommended, rather than dried. Indonesians also use laos and galagal which give a similar flavour and are occasionally available fresh from Asian Food stores.

-	Palm Sugar: Dark brown sugar made from the juice of the coconut palm flower. Sold in hard blocks, cut off required amount and crush it. Available from Asian Food stores.

-	Peanut Oil: A light oil used extensively in Indonesian cooking. Coconut oil is also used.

-	Rice Flour: Is finely ground white or brown rice and often used as a thickener.

-	Shrimp Paste(terasi): Extremely pungent, salty paste, sold in jars. Also available in hard blocks, use sparingly.

- Soy Sauce (kecap): Light soy sauce which is thin and salty. Kecap manis is dark soy sauce which is thick and sweet.

That is some of the following ingredients that we can use when we make Indonesian dishes. To learn more about the Indonesian dishes recipes, please visit: http://recipes-idea.blogspot.com, good luck for all of you guys.
